Theater History
The 46th Street Theatre was renamed the Richard Rodgers in 1990 after the late composer, known for his collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II and musicals like Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. This theatre, built in 1924, was also the first to utilize “democratic seating,” in which all patrons used the same entrance, whether they were heading to orchestra or balcony seats.
