Theater History
Originally called the Uris Theatre when it opened in 1972, it was renamed the Gershwin in 1983 after brothers George and Ira Gershwin, who composed scores for stage and screen. Popular songs include “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and “The Man I Love.” One of their most popular works is Porgy and Bess, composed by George Gershwin, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and a libretto by DuBose Heyward. The Gershwin Theatre is operated by the Nederlander Organization and has been the home of the blockbuster musical Wicked since 2003, and other productions include Oklahoma!, Riverdance on Broadway, and Show Boat.
