The Al Hirschfeld Theatre is located at 302 W. 45th Street and is currently home to Moulin Rouge! The Musical!, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical at the 74th Tony Awards. The theater first opened in New York City in 1924 as the Martin Beck Theatre, named for vaudevillian promotor Martin Beck, with the show Madame Pompadour. The theater was renamed in 2003 after Broadway caricaturist Al Hirschfeld who was famous for his black and white portraits of celebrities and Broadway stars. His work often appeared in publications like The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and more. The theater is close to classic New York City attractions like Central Park, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Center, and Bryant Park. It’s also convenient to Restaurant Row, with an abundance of restaurants (including Joe Allen on 46th Street). Nearby theaters include Palace Theatre, Majestic Theatre, Richard Rodgers Theatre, St. James Theatre, Booth Theatre, and New Amsterdam Theatre.
